A full-ride scholarship for a woman studying science, technology, engineering, or math, funded by Cards Against Humanity.
In April 2015, Cards Against Humanity released the Science Pack, an expansion pack co-authored with Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal’s Zach Weinersmith and Bad Astronomy’s Phil Plait. We knew from the outset that we wanted sales of the Science Pack to go to a science-related nonprofit, but we couldn’t find any organizations that seemed right. We decided that with the funding we expected, directly funding an education would have the greatest impact.
Targeting the scholarship to women was an obvious decision. A few creators of Cards Against Humanity have backgrounds in science, and underrepresentation of women in STEM fields is a glaring problem we’ve observed firsthand. Everyone at Cards Against Humanity was fortunate enough to receive a college education, and now we hope to make the opportunity available to others while raising visibility for women working in science.
The winner of the Science Ambassador Scholarship will receive full tuition coverage for up to four years.
Scholarship applications will be reviewed by a board of over forty women who hold higher degrees and work professionally in science, including representatives from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Harvard Medical School, the Smithsonian Institution, the Adler Planetarium, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as well as TED, NSF, Huxley, and Hubble fellows.
Applicants must be U.S. residents in high school or college and must identify as a woman in a way that’s significant to them.
