Help friends of Aquarius save the world's only under sea research habitat!!!
This one of a kind facility was hit hard and needs our help to stay under water thereby enabling a future for its unique type of scientific research, education, exploration and innovation!
All donations are tax deductible and will go directly to Florida International University (FIU) Aquarius Fund with the sole purpose of hurricane repairs and recovery. Please leave email when donating to receive letter from FIU for tax deductible donation.
Deployed 60 feet beneath the surface in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Aquarius is a globally significant asset that provides unparalleled means to study the ocean, test and develop state-of-the-art undersea technology, train specialized divers and astronauts, and engage the world's imagination. At Aquarius, scientists are at the cutting edge of research on coral reefs, ocean acidification, climate change, fisheries and the overall health of the oceans.
Aquarius is a complex diving system that consists of the lab below the ocean; a life support buoy on the surface that houses power generators, air compressors and data connections; and a mission control center in Islamorada, Florida. Using a technique known as saturation diving, Aquarius residents can spend days to weeks under water conducting research that cannot be accomplished anywhere else on the planet. During Hurricane Irma, the habitat and support structures have suffered severe damage.
The habitat remained in place during Irma and the pressured components of the vessel is completely intact and dry. However, the exterior requires numerous repairs for operation to life support systems including air tank systems and controls located on the seafloor and within the wet porch. Without these systems, the habitat cannot operate or conduct missions.
Additionally, the Life Support Buoy broke free from six mooring lines attached to the seafloor and was taken 15 miles to the southwest by the storm. All of the mooring lines, buoys and shackles were destroyed. The structure is still floating as well as generators and compressors being intact but when forced under a bridge the tower was snapped in half.
