by Kassie Perlongo Research & Innovation Learn August 30, 2016 Lionfish are invasive to the Atlantic Ocean and their voracious appetites are destroying coral reef ecosystems. RISE (Robots in Service of the Environment) is a new non-profit company looking to restore the balance by building a robot to ‘zap’ and harvest these predators before it’s too late. From their website: “The complete robot is a collection of component systems. These include the ROV platform, capture mechanism, control system, vision system, user interface, and more. Luckily each one of these components exists today in some form but they have never been assembled specifically as a device to hunt lionfish, nor designed to be produced in large numbers at low cost and operated by a non-professional. Nonetheless, the experience learned from these existing components and efforts will allow for the rapid development of the RISE robot and gives confidence that it can be done.” Kassie Perlongo Kassie is the Managing Editor at Robohub... read more lionfish RISE robots saving the environment Research & Innovation Business & Finance Health & Medicine Politics, Law & Society Arts & Entertainment Education & DIY Events Military & Defense Exploration & Mining Mapping & Surveillance Enviro. & Agriculture Aerial Automotive Industrial Automation Consumer & Household Space latest posts popular reported elsewhere The Drone Center’s Weekly Roundup: 8/29/16 by Center for the Study of the Drone at Bard College How cooperative behaviour could make artificial intelligence more human by Roger Whitaker Installing and running time synchronization, with chrony by Robots for Roboticists Two LiDAR makers each get big funding by Frank Tobe Robot makers: The future of digital rapid design and fabrication of robots by Nicola Bezzo, Ankur Mehta, Cagdas Onal, Michael T.
